As Spanish teachers, we have the opportunity to not only teach our students the language but also to expose them to different cultures and traditions–and in reverse, show how the Spanish language/customs can be incorporated into everyday American culture & traditions! One of the traditions that unites many of our countries, across the Americas (including Latin America & the US) is Mother’s Day, or “Día de las Madres.”

Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate the important figures in our lives, whether they be our actual mothers, grandmothers, aunts, or mother figures of choice. It is a day to express gratitude for all that they do and to show them how much we love and appreciate them.

In the Spanish classroom, we can incorporate this celebration of mother figures by providing activities that are relevant to our student’s lives. For example, students can design their own card (in the target language) to give to their mother figure. Link to the free activity below, where you get 20+ cards, with various skin shades, tones, religions, and family constructions! This way, students can have an inclusive Mother’s Day!

By incorporating real-life and relevant culture in the Spanish classroom, we increase student buy-in and make it more meaningful for them. It also provides an opportunity to practice language skills in a meaningful way.

Here are some OTHER ideas for activities that you can do with your students:

• Ask your students to interview their mother figure about their life and experiences. This can be done in Spanish, and the students can practice their listening and speaking skills.

• Have your students write a letter or poem in Spanish to their mother figure expressing their gratitude and love. This can be a great opportunity for them to practice their writing skills.

• To practice adjectives and vocabulary, describe various mothers and have students match the description with a corresponding image!
• Again, have your students design their own card for their mother figure. This can be a creative and artistic way to practice language skills and express gratitude. Link to free download here!
