Celebrating Puerto Rico with El Grito de Lares 🇵🇷🎉

Another powerful September celebration to share with students is El Grito de Lares (September 23). This historic uprising in Puerto Rico in 1868 was a call for independence from Spain and has become a lasting symbol of resistance, freedom, and national identity. Even though the movement was suppressed, its legacy continues to inspire Puerto Ricans today. Highlighting this event in class gives students another lens to see how communities across the Spanish-speaking world have fought for justice and self-determination.
